The Philadelphia Eagles will target Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, according to latest NFL rumors. However, the Eagles opportunity will depend on the Bears’ decision on their receiver, who can hit the free agent market this 2017 offseason.
The Bears have a chance to franchise tag Jeffery. However, it would be too costly with a prize of over $17 million next season. The Bears are not Super Bowl contenders basing on their current roster. So there is a chance that Chicago lets go of their top wide receiver if they think the WR does not deserve the big contract.
NFL rumors of Eagles’ interest in Alshon Jeffery make the rounds
Many media outlets are confirming the Eagles’ interest in the Bears receiver. Among those confirming the NFL rumors is Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
“Several league sources anticipate the Eagles being in on Alshon Jeffery. Philadelphia was aggressive in exploring trade options in-season on other receivers as well, like Torrey Smith. They need to add more than one pass catcher this offseason.” La Canfora stated recently.
The Eagles primary target could be Jeffery but they have also been linked to other receivers in the market. The club has shown interest in Washington Redskins WR’s Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson and Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills.
Alson Jeffery to demand big contract
If the Eagles want Jeffery, they are expected to offer him a multiyear contract with a starting salary of what he could get from the Bears. Being one of the top free agents in the market, Jeffrey will demand a big contract. This would be his first multiyear and multimillion deal after earning about $15M last season.
Philadelphia currently has no big salary cap space. But, they have a chance to clear some salary in the next few weeks. If they were successful in making room in their cap, then getting Jeffery would be a top priority this 2017 offseason. The Eagles can release veterans soon and this would make it possible for Philadelphia to acquire the top free agents in the market.
Getting Jeffery or another top receiver is important for the Eagles if they want to contend for the NFL playoffs next season. Young quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to improve next year and getting weapons like Jeffery for him would be good for the second-year QB’s development.
Jeffery will be playing in his sixth NFL season. He has been with the Bears the last five years and registered 4,549 receiving yards on 304 catches with 26 touchdowns.
