The NFL season is set to kickoff in less than three weeks and the New Orleans Saints are preparing to trim their roster. According to the latest NFL rumors, Saints head coach Sean Payton is unimpressed with wide receiver Brandon Coleman and return specialist Marcus Murphy.

In their 16-9 preseason loss to the Houston Texans last Saturday, Coleman and Murphy played really bad and they could be losing their grips on a roster spot. Coach Payton criticized both players but the harshest words were directed toward the 24-year-old wide receiver.

Coleman dropped two passes against the Texans including one that was ruled a fumble. Payton was unhappy with the WR’s lack of physicality that he should have due to his 6-foot-6, 225-pound frame. The coach also talked about Coleman’s dull training camp.

“He’s gonna have to pick it up. I think he will. I think he’ll compete. But I don’t like how he’s catching the ball on the first play that comes out of his hands. Too many times the ball’s separating from him,” Payton said, via ESPN.

On the other hand, Marcus Murphy opened the game against Houston with a fumble, his second in two preseason games. Coach Payton had some unkind words for Murphy after the game that could start more NFL rumors about his future.

“It just can’t happen. We’ll find another returner. Tommylee Lewis will get every opportunity as a returner because if the alternative is putting it on the ground, then we’ll find someone else,” Payton said.

According to Dallas Robinson of ProFootball Rumors, the New Orleans Saints have rookie WR Michael Thomas, starter Marques Colston, Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead ahead of Brandon Coleman on the depth chart.

As for Marcus Murphy, he has to play better or undrafted rookie free agent Tommylee Lewis will get his role. Nevertheless, it should be noted that these are all NFL rumors at the moment and the two players have a chance to prove themselves in their next preseason game on Friday.
