Latest NFL trade news Friday has the New England Patriots getting Barkevious Mingo in a deal with the Cleveland Browns, which will acquire the Patriots’ fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
According to reports, Mingo will join the Patriots this week, per NFL.com. The 25-year-old linebacker was the sixth overall pick by the Patriots in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Patriots have also acquired the seventh pick in that rookie draft Jonathan Cooper in a previous trade with the Arizona Cardinals.
Mingo will get his chance under head coach Bill Belichick’s defense after registering 108 tackles, 7 sacks and 1 interception in his first three years in the NFL. Mingo played at least 15 games in three seasons with the Patriots and started 16 of them.
Mingo played for the Louisiana State University Tigers in college football from 2009 to 2012. He helped LSU to the SEC championship in 2011 and earned two-second team selections in 2011 and 2012.
The Browns were expected to trade Mingo after they did not pick up the linebacker’s fifth-year option in his contract earlier this year. There were NFL rumors that there were weight issues with Mingo while with the Browns. The Patriots like his potential and will give Mingo a chance to earn minutes.
In the related Patriots news this week, the team traded center Bryan Stork to the Washington Redskins. The trade for Barkevious Mingo could mean a different but younger defensive team for Belichick’s squad.
