In most mock drafts, the Cleveland Browns are projected to use the No. 1 overall pick to acquire defensive lineman Myles Garrett in the 2017 NBA draft. However, there are speculations that they are interested in drafting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. According to the latest NFL report, the Browns plan to trade the No. 12 overall pick for a higher selection in the upcoming draft.
Since the offseason started, the Browns remain active on the market looking for a quarterback. New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo emerged as Cleveland’s top target. Unfortunately, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Patriots will not trade Garoppolo this offseason and he’s expected to participate in their upcoming training camp.
Cleveland Browns engage in trade talks with at least four NFL teams
According to Michael Silver of NFL Network, the Browns have contacted at least four NFL teams in the top eight to have a trade discussion involving the 12th overall pick. The top eight include the Browns, 49ers, Bears, Jaguars, Titans, Jets, Chargers and Panthers.
“The Browns have been doing their due diligence and investigating the possibility,” Silver said on Tuesday’s edition of Up to the Minute Live. “I’ve learned that at least three teams in the top eight have been contacted by the Browns and discussions have taken place about the prospect of moving up. Now, this is something that would likely happen in real time when these teams were on the clock because obviously if the target is Mitchell Trubisky and he goes earlier than expected, then those discussions would be moot.”
Silvers didn’t mention any specific team. However, there are speculations that the Panthers, Jets, Titans and the 49ers are the four NFL teams. Of all the four teams, dealing with the 49ers is the best option. This could give the Browns a higher chance of drafting both Garrett and Trubisky.
Cleveland Browns picking Mitchell Trubisky over Myles Garrett at No. 1
Veteran quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick are still available in the market. However, it remains questionable if the Browns will be interested in adding either of them to their team. With the Patriots removing Garoppolo on the trade market, the Browns may decide to use the No. 1 overall pick to acquire a quarterback.
“The Browns could still take Trubisky at No. 1. They could still trade down and try to take him a little lower than one. The more likely scenario right now would be trying to use that 12th pick and get up a little higher to get the quarterback of the future,” Silver added.
