After landing the third place in Rio Olympics 2016, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross continue winning in ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball title in Long Beach, California on Sunday. With Brazilian pair Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas’ absence, the Americans took advantage and defended their title.
The American duo, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross, defeated Spanish pair Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizo in the final round 21-16, 21-16 results. They successfully safeguarded their title for the second time within three years of playing in the event.
Jennings and Ross earned seven successive wins against several teams last week. During the finals, they ended up fighting against their Spanish friends with an assurance of winning within two rounds. “We love those girls so much, they are dear friends of ours. We wanted to beat them down,” Walsh told NBC Sports.
According to the same source, Jennings and Ross’ succeeding wins this year were driven after winning nothing in the last year due to Walsh’s right shoulder surgery. That event resulted to some wins including their bronze medal in the recent Olympic Games.
Jennings’ coach, Don Shaw, explained about her performance despite the injury she acquired last year. He stated that once a player becomes injured or scathed with series of injuries, the player’s performance certainly be affected.
But the power Jennings produced in every game she’s in was the same as before as if she hasn’t done surgery at all. All throughout her career, Jennings got five shoulder surgeries, Shaw revealed. During the time she played in Rio, she managed to place US in the third rank using her one arm all throughout the matches.
She used her left hand to serve and gave powerful attacks against their opponents. The only asset she possessed at that moment was her geometric knowledge in beach volleyball court and perfect placement on defense. He added that it was ridiculous to witness a powerful game from a player like her, Washington Post noted.
One great example was the recent World Series event on Sunday. With the help of her partner April Ross, she was able to defend the title for the second time given her deteriorating condition. Until now, Jennings remained unstoppable at her age.
