The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings defeated the San Miguel Beermen in a high-scoring Game 1, 115-108 last Monday. SMB will try to bounce back and tie best-of-five semifinals series on Wednesday night (September 28).
San Miguel head coach Leo Austria blamed their lack of discipline why they lost to Ginebra in the opening game of the series. The mentor said that they should have went more to center June Mar Fajardo on offense as Ginebra stopped import forward Elijah Millsap’s penetration.
“We’re not disciplined enough to execute our play,” Austria said to ABS CBN News.
Fajardo finished with a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds and was 9-of-16 from the floor. Millsap top scored for SMB with 29 points and added 11 assists but was just 13-of-30 in his field goal shooting.
In Game 1, San Miguel grabbed the 36-24 lead after the first quarter but Ginebra stormed back in the next two quarters. Ginebra outscored SMB, 55-40 in the second and third quarters. Ginebra took a 79-76 lead entering the final quarter.
Ginebra won despite zero points from star point guard L.A. Tenorio, who was 0-of-3 from the field but played in 31 minutes. Ginebra import Justin Brownlee had a game-high 39 points and added 16 rebounds.
Scottie Thompson was the only other player in Ginebra’s line-up in double digits scoring with 11 points and 10 rebounds plus 6 assists. Japeth Aguilar and Joe DeVance added 7 points each.
