Daniel Craig is still first choice to play James Bond; Sam Heughan is a close second

Uncertainty is the word best described on who will play the next James Bond after the current 007 actors Daniel Craig is reportedly exhausted on portraying the iconic British spy.

Callum McDougall, an executive producer of the last four Bond films, said in an interview with BBC last Friday that “he wish he knew” if Craig was coming back but that he is still definitely the franchise’s “first choice.”

Since then, rumors are swirling that the studio and producers of James Bond have been actively pursuing Craig to return to the franchise following the massive success of the last Bond film, Spectre, where it took in over $880 million worldwide at the box office.Speculation has been rife on whether Craig will return to reprise his role as Bond for the fifth time after the actor said in an interview that he would “rather slit my wrists” than play the character again. He went on to say that he is “over it at the moment” and all he wants “to do is move on.”

In the meantime, the search for the new Bond after Craig is heating up, as a list of possible actors is making rounds online to take over the iconic British spy role. While popular actors on the list include Idris Elba, Theo James, Mad Men star Jon Hamm and Marvel actors Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, recent reports suggest that Outlander actor, Sam Heughan, is also a popular choice for the role.

According to Inquistr, Heughan has been shortlisted for the Bond role considering that franchise producer Barbara Broccoli likes her spy to be the quiet sorts, without much media attention and this throws many contenders off the list. She apparently doesn’t want someone who is already immensely popular.

It was even reported by the Telegraph that when Broccoli was looking out for James Bond in Casino Royale, she first spotted Daniel Craig, “who was still anonymous, but extremely well-respected and highly-regarded actor”, in the BBC series Our Friends in the North. Since then, “he’s given the character a whole new dimension.”

Director Sam Mendes, who confirmed he is leaving the franchise after working on Skyfall and Spectre, told the Telegraph that the choice of the next Bond is “not a democracy,” warning the winning actor will be a wildcard no-one could have predicted.

According to Inqusitr, the next James Bond will be played by an actor who is currently rocking the television. Outlander’s Sam Heughan seems to be the next perfect choice.
