Good news for Game of Thrones fans.
The HBO super hit show has been renewed for Season 7, the network announced Thursday. The network though did not announce several episodes for the new season will have next year.
But as executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently told Variety, the final two seasons of the show will have much shorter episodes. Apparently there will be six episodes for season 7 and seven episodes for season 8.
“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap,” said Benioff. “That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”
Game of Thrones has a wide fan following including celebrities like Nina Dobrev, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Lawrence, Kerry Washington.
News about the renewal of the show for next couldn’t come at a more appropriate time. Game of Thrones Season 6 is premiering on April 24 at 9 PM on HBO.
Game of Thrones has been HBO’s most popular show. Last year the show received 12 Primetime Emmy Awards for a television show in a single year, the highest for any show so far.
Clearly, if the show ends two seasons later, HBO will have to fill in the void by bringing in a more compelling story like Game of Thrones.
“We do believe that every show we put on needs to aspire to its own greatness,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo recently told Variety. “It’s nice to have a show [like ‘Game of Thrones’] that hits this kind of zeitgeist of popular culture. At the same time, it’s really just one piece of a bigger tapestry for us, and I never lose sight of that.”
Along with Game of Thrones, HBO has also renewed two of its popular comedy shows Veep and Silicon Valley.
