Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera. The Catalan giants are desperate to strengthen their midfield. They have now turned their attention towards this Manchester United superstar.

Barcelona are close to sealing a £55 million ($71m) shock deal for Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera. This is according to reports in Spanish publication Don Balon. The 27-year-old has been in incredible form for Jose Mourinho’s side. His performances have reportedly impressed Barcelona chiefs who are desperate to strengthen their midfield for the next season.

Herrera is key to United’s challenge for top four

Herrera has been in fine form in recent weeks as Manchester United look to break into the Premier League’s top four. The midfielder has scored one goal and provided three assists in his last four games, making it two and seven respectively all season.

Barcelona are reportedly in the market to replace Andreas Iniesta. They are also considering Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Verratti. Barca chiefs are said to feel Herrera fits the club’s style of play. They are confident he will impress at the Nou Camp.

The Catalan giants’ woeful performances in the Champions League have led the board to have a hard think about their squad. With Iniesta now 32 and not at his best, Barcelona are desperate to sign Herrera along with Verratti in the transfer window.

Herrera has quickly grown to become one of the most important players in Jose Mourinho’s squad. With one goal and three assists in his last 4 matches, the Spaniard is the midfield engine at Old Trafford. Hence the Catalan giants are desperate to sign the combative 27-year-old in the next transfer window.

Times of change at Barcelona

Andre Gomes have been struggling for Barcelona and Iniesta ageing. Hence the Catalan giants’ midfield has been outplayed in many big matches. The arrival of an understated Herrera will definitely add more strength and steel to the Catalan midfield.

Herrera arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2014 from Athletic Bilbao, costing the Red Devils £29million ($37m) after he activated his buy-out clause. The 27-year-old won the FA Cup under Louis van Gaal last season. He has also helped Mourinho’s side to the EFL Cup and Community Shield this term.

With Luis Enrique leaving Barcelona at the end of the season, a lot of changes are expected in the first team squad. Hence, the Barcelona chiefs are said to have greenlighted the proposal to have a major squad overhaul in the summer transfer window.
