New Zodiac Signs 2016: 4 reasons why NASA changed the astrological chart

By on

Horoscope fans all over the world are freaking out over the total overhaul of the astrological chart with the recent inclusion of a 13th zodiac sign in Ophiuchus.

Ever since news that NASA changed the astrological chart, people have been thrown off-guard considering that the astrological system has been around for a very, very long time. Many people have been basing their fortunes and fate around their star sign and with the news of a new zodiac, it is completely understandable what the confusion is about.

However, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration clearly emphasize that they did not change anything in the astrological chart and these five reasons will explain why they introduced a 13th zodiac.

Astrology, unlike Astronomy, is not science

According to NASA, astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects such as star, comets, planets and galaxies, and phenomena that originate outside the Earth’s atmosphere whereas astrology is a system of beliefs, where a person’s character is based on the position of the stars, meaning more like a fortune-telling study.

With that in mind, the 13th zodiac has been around since the ancient times as the Babylonians already knew of Ophiuchus some 3000 years ago. The ancient astrologers divided the circle into twelve parts to make a whole astrological system and left Ophiuchus out to have an equal division based on the 12 months in a year.

NASA did not change the zodiac signs, they just did the math

NASA said that the change in the zodiac signs was something that needed to be done because of sheer mathematics. It made its update based on facts, pointing out that the ancient astronomers should be blamed for leaving out Ophiuchus entirely.

“To make a tidy match with their 12-month calendar, the Babylonians ignored the fact that the sun actually moves through 13 constellations, not 12. Then they assigned each of those 12 constellations equal amounts of time,” NASA wrote in a post on Tumblr.

The sky has changed throughout the centuries

Another reason for the radical change is that the sky today is very different to how it was thousands of years ago and due to the Earth’s axis no longer points in the same direction, the existing astrological signs are about a month out.

Accordingly, the position of these stars in connection to our planet has moved to some degree throughout the centuries.

Ophiuchus has been around this whole time

According to New Scientist, Ophiuchus has been around thousands of years ago since the Greeks identified the constellation, but has been ignored by astrologers. Also there are as many as 21 constellations and as the Earth wobbles like a top, very slowly, and over centuries that changes the dates the sun is in a given constellation.
