Holly Holm’s manager, Lenny Fresquez recently said that Miesha Tate chose a weaker opponent in Amanda Nunes for her first title defense at UFC 200. And now, Amanda Nunes in her defense has slammed down Holly Holm and her manager.
Amanda Nunes believes that she is well-prepared to fight Miesha Tate and has also called herself the best choice for UFC 200.
“How am I easier if his fighter was the one who got finished? She was put to sleep. Holly Holm couldn’t defend herself because she lacks jiu-jitsu. If she fights Miesha again, she will be a weak opponent. In order to be a champion, you have to know at least a little bit of everything. With all due respect to the other athletes, I’m the most well prepared one,” she told Combate.
News of her fight against Tate came as a shock to everyone. It was widely expected that Tate and Holm were likely to have a rematch at UFC 200. But by Tate’s own admission, Holm’s name never came up for UFC 200.
“They thought that Amanda was the next best girl in line. They were like, ‘Look, you just beat Holly. You finished her.’ They didn’t feel that it was necessary to have an immediate rematch; it didn’t warrant an immediate rematch,” Tate revealed.
“It wasn’t one of those performances or such a crazy fight that we’ve got to have an immediate rematch. It was kind of like, ‘Let’s open up the division – we’d like you to fight Amanda. I said, ‘Cool.’ Amanda’s someone I’ve had my eye on for a while, and I know she’s had her eye on me. Now’s the time we get to get in there and do what we do.”
Miesha Tate, in fact, is looking forward to her fight with Amanda Nunes.
“I’m looking to fight someone new, someone that I haven’t beat yet. I think Amanda, being on that win streak, having that momentum, having that confidence, I think that says more beating her than it would against beating Holly again,” Tate said.
