UFC 196 Results: Nate Diaz beats Conor McGregor

By on

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor defeated Jose Aldo in 13 seconds. After that victory he decided to move up a division.

However, that decision seems to have cost him big. Moving up to 25 pounds proved too expensive for McGregor. It seems Nate Diaz got too heavy for him.

Nate Diaz who came at the last minute, precisely on two weeks’ notice defeated McGregor in the second round of their welterweight main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The time of the tapout was 4:12.

It is quite an achievement for Diaz who was brought in at the last minute after Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of the fight due to a broken foot.

“I knew it was going to be a war. If I’m not in the best shape, I gotta start slow, save my energy, and then pick it up,” said Diaz, reports MMA Fighting.

It was a bout that has been crazy and wild even from the start. At the UFC 196 press conference, the two fighters even caused a brawl like situation. Security and UFC staff members immediately came in and handled the situation. McGregor even claimed that he broke Diaz’s wrist. The Nevada Athletic Commission however said that the UFC fighters won’t be penalized since the situation got handled well.

Like the UFC 194 fight, the UFC 196 fight too brought many surprises. Round 1 was all about McGregor, who landed great shots and even bust opened Diaz’s eye.

But a bloodied Diaz responded back with a powerful blow to McGregor’s jaw in the second round. And since then it was all about Diaz’s powerful blows.

The featherweight champ however, made no excuses for the loss.

“I took the chance,” McGregor said. “I thought I took first round, I was inefficient with my energy. I respect Nate, he took the punch. These things happen in MMA. I took a chance and it didn’t work out.”
