Rumors and speculations are now swirling around the Toronto Raptors, who are reportedly trading Terrence Ross and a future first-round pick for Nerlens Noel of the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Nerlens Noel failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension by the league’s October 31 deadline. With this, Noel is set to become a restricted free agent next summer, provided that he will be receiving a qualifying offer from the Sixers.
As of now, the Sixers are still unable to get their first win of the 2016-17 NBA season. General manager Bryan Colangelo said that there is “not a chance” that his team will tank this season. However, with Jerryd Bayless, Ben Simmons, and Nerlens Noel sidelined due to injury while Jahlil Okafor and Joel Embiid are both on minutes restrictions, the Sixers are projected to be a lottery team again.
This is expected to happen unless Colangelo finds a way to improve the Sixers’ current roster. As most NBA analysts predict, Nerlens Noel is one of the big men who will likely finish the season with another team. If the Sixers still fail to address the logjam on their frontcourt, there is a higher possibility that Noel will be happy to entertain offers from other NBA teams next summer.
“The one who clearly wants to leave is Noel, by way of his Twitter bio (“Current Philadelphia 76er!!”) and his preseason comment that Philly’s glut at a center is “silly.” The Sixers need to deal him, but how will he recover from his recent knee surgery? And will they receive enough in return for him? In spite of these unanswerable questions, his desire to be moved and his “current” team’s pursuit of help on the perimeter are likely to drive a trade sooner than later,” Ian Thomsen of NBA.com said.
According to Bret Stuter of The Sixer Sense, the Sixers could engage in a trade deal with the Toronto Raptors before the February deadline. In a suggested trade scenario, the Sixers will be sending Nerlens Noel to Toronto for Terrence Ross and a future first-round pick. This works on the ESPN trade machine.
Nerlens Noel will undeniably give a boost in the Raptors’ frontcourt, giving them a quality rim protector. For the Sixers, Terrence Ross could be the athletic wing that they need to improve their performance. The future first-round pick will ease the departure of Noel while addressing the logjam in their frontcourt.
