Manchester United have played just nine Premier League games this season and manager Jose Mourinho is already looking to revamp the leaky defense of his squad. The future of Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind seems to be on the chopping block as the Portuguese manager looks to bring in Antonio Rudiger from Serie A club A.S. Roma.

United have the second worst record among the top 10 teams in terms of goals conceded in the Premier League until now. The Red Devils have been on the receiving end of 12 goals, four of which came against an away trip to Stamford Bridge facing Chelsea. Both Smalling and Blind were extremely poor in the match, according to Mirror.

Mourinho is also looking to bring in a proper right-back to complement Antonio Valencia. Matteo Darmian could be sold when the January transfer window opens next year.

Marcos Rojo has also failed to impress the 53-year-old former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager. Left-back Luke Shaw, despite having limited appearances owing to injuries have not been able to convince Mourinho as well, according to Mail Online.

The only defender who has impressed the Manchester United manager until now is Eric Bailly, who has recently been severely injured. Bailly is expected to spend a lot of time along the sidelines and a true return date has not been released for the player. Bailly was United’s summer acquisition from Villarreal and the defender has shown some sturdy performances until his injury this season.

The first name on Mourinho’s list as he heads into the winter transfer window is Antonio Rudiger, who is also a Chelsea target. The 23-year-old Germany international has recently recovered from a knee injury and is one of the most promising center-backs in world football.

Although Roma wants to keep hold of the player, a transfer fee of $42.51 million will surely tempt the Serie A club to sell.

Here is a video of Rudiger highlighting his talents.
