DeMarcus Cousins could be the next franchise player for the Dallas Mavericks. According to very early NBA rumors for the 2018 free agency, the Texas team will chase the big man, who will become a free agent two years from now.
Cousins is still signed with the Sacramento Kings for the next two seasons but there is growing belief around the league that the Kings will have no choice but to trade him in the upcoming 2016-2017 NBA season to net maximum value for their franchise big man.
Just earlier this summer, superstar Kevin Durant left title contenders Oklahoma City Thunder to join the already strong Golden State Warriors, which is now the NBA’s “Super Team” the next few years. Cousins leaving the Kings, a team, which has struggled the past decade, is expected considering the big man’s chance of moving to another squad that can contend for the title.
The Kings are scared that they will suffer the same fate as OKC, which lost their franchise player to nothing by not trading him while he was still with the team. Cousins could leave the Kings for nothing as well so Sacramento would be wise to deal him now so they can net young players or future first round picks for their big man.
Cousins signed a four-year $62 million contract with the Kings in 2013 and the big man is set to earn one of the richest deals with his fellow superstars earning more this 2016 offseason due to the increase in salary cap in the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon started the very early 2018 free agency NBA rumors by claiming on social media that the Mavericks already have their eyes set on Cousins.
For Mavs fans who might be wondering, DeMarcus Cousins is set to hit free agency in summer of 2018. Yes, Mavs expected to go hard after him.

By 2018, the Mavericks will be searching for a new franchise player with Dirk Nowitzki expected to be playing in his final years in the league. Dallas will have money, and a maximum contract, to offer Cousins, who will be demanding deals similar to that of Mike Conley and LeBron James, who got about $30 million per year deals this summer.
The DeMarcus Cousins rumors linking him to Dallas is very much possible with the Mavericks having a big salary cap space in 2018. Only Harrison Barnes ($24.1 million), Wesley Matthews ( $18.62 million) are the players with big contracts for the Mavericks that year.
