Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau has stated they badly need a veteran and a point guard to lead them. Trade rumors suggest the Timberwolves send Ricky Rubio for the Sacramento Kings’ Rudy Gay.
Thibodeau insisted that he wants to get a veteran player who could lead his roster. In trading Rubio, the Timberwolves let Kris Dunn get quality minutes and the experience he needs as well. In return, they would get a veteran who averages 19.6 points with 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Unlike DeMarcus Cousins, Gay looks at the expendable player on the Kings roster. And since he has called for a trade, the Kings might bite this one. Though Gay has a player option in his contract, the Timberwolves could offer a hefty contract for him to return.
But if Gay enjoys playing along with Zach LaVine and Karl-Anthony Wiggins, then Thibodeau addresses his issues. For the Kings, they get a veteran point guard who could possible space out the floor for them. Rubio could help out by giving Cousins the ball down the paint in their high-low plays.
Though Rubio’s shooting might be of a concern, but with proper spacing, the Kings may find a solution to it. Aside from that, ESPN’s trade machine agrees to the deal as per salary and trade rules.
For the Timberwolves, they need to work on defense if they want to get a playoff spot this season. Getting Gay may give them that leadership to turn things around their roster. Their talented roster has what it takes to make it work, but their second unit needs to step up to compliment their starters.
If Gay would not be available, Thibodeau may look at his young talents and place them on the trading block. One thing is clear for the Timberwolves, Thibodeau wants his team to win and improve big time. They have until the trade deadline to make decisions for a trade as well.
