The Los Angeles Dodgers came up short against the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS and their primary need is a starting pitcher. The latest MLB rumors suggest that the Dodgers should acquire Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers.
According to Bleacher Report, the Tigers are open to trading any player they have and begin their rebuild despite having a good season wherein they missed the playoffs by 2.5 games. The team is getting older with ace Justin Verlander and first baseman Miguel Cabrera as possible trade candidates.
Tigers general manager Al Avila hinted at the possibility of rebuilding in an interview with Jason Beck of MLB.com. He mentioned that the team is open to talking with other teams regarding their top players and listen to their offers.
“In our conversations with other clubs, we will be open-minded, and if somebody has interest in a certain player, we’ll take a look at it. If it makes sense for the Detroit Tigers present and future, then we certainly will consider things that we feel will make us better,” Avila said.
Rob Rogacki of SB Nation thinks that the Tigers moving Justin Verlander for baseball reasons is good as long as he goes for several top prospects. He suggested one possible target for the Tigers, the Dodgers’ young left-handed pitcher, Julio Urias.
“If you’re trading Verlander for Julio Urias, for example, yeah I could see that as a smart move. I will also potentially defect to the Dodgers as a result,” Rogacki opined.
The former AL MVP and Cy Young winner is no longer the ace he once was but he had a bounce back season this year. He finished with a 16-9 record, 3.04 ERA and 254 strikeouts. He is one of the favorites to win the AL Comeback Player of the Year this season.
On the other hand, the Dodgers are full of prospects to acquire Justin Verlander from the Tigers. A one-two punch combination of Clayton Kershaw and Verlander could help Los Angeles become World Series favorites next year.
Nevertheless, these are just MLB rumors at the moment and should be taken with a grain of salt. Other teams that could use Verlander next season are the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.
