NBA rumors and speculations are now circulating with the Los Angeles Lakers about the possibility of trading their young cores, D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle, for veteran players in the upcoming off-season.
The Lakers made their first step in rebuilding the team by hiring their former player and current Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton to be their head coach next season. Many praised the Lakers management for hiring Walton but admitted that hiring a good coach was not enough. Lakers next move should be signing quality players especially those who are available in free agency markets.
According to a previous report, Lakers revealed their plans to Walton including their free agency targets. This year’s incoming free agency is composed of many potential players including Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan, Hassan Whiteside and other superstars who will be expected to gain many suitors in the off-season.
According to a report from Lakers Nation, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak stated that it could take “ten or fifteen years” to rebuild through the draft so he stressed the importance of free-agency and well-positioned trade. Many were disappointed after the Lakers were unable to get last year’s potential free agents so they might consider arriving at a new game plan in the upcoming off-season.
It is undeniable that most players are not looking at how a certain team could pay for them but rather prioritize their future with the team they will be playing. Lakers, who had their worst season under Byron Scott, would be having a hard time attracting players if they will insist on retaining their current line up.
Based on a previous report, there were rumors that the Lakers will be trading D’Angelo Russell and a future draft pick for Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler and Cameron Bairstow. This will be part of the plan in luring future superstars to sign with the team.
The Los Angeles Lakers young cores were undoubtedly had future in the league. However, with the Lakers plan to be back sooner in title contention, they must consider trading these young cores for veteran players who have much experience and better performance.
Getting veteran players in the upcoming off-season can lead to higher chances of signing free agents like Kevin Durant, Hassan Whiteside or DeMar DeRozan.
