The Portland Trail Blazers blame their recent struggle with their lack of frontcourt help. The latest NBA rumors suggest a trade that will give them Hassan Whiteside in exchange for a trade package centered on C.J. McCollum.

As the February trade deadline draws near, the Miami Heat are one of the NBA teams who is expected to be active on the market. Most rumors predict Goran Dragic as the Heat’s most likely trade asset. However, some people believe that Hassan Whiteside could also be on his way out of South Beach.

In the recent offseason, the Heat decided to make Whiteside their top priority. This led to the departure of Dwyane Wade, who spent his 13-year NBA career in Miami. It was revealed that the Heat initially offered Wade an amount lower than he demands.

This made the 34-year-old shooting guard decides to leave the Heat and join the Chicago Bulls. So far, Wade shares his leadership in Chicago, helping Jimmy Butler bring the team back to playoff contention. Meanwhile, the Heat are 9-19 and projected to suffer a disappointing season.

If the Heat decides to trade Hassan Whiteside, there is no doubt that they can get a good return. Acquiring young assets and a couple of first round picks will help the Heat if they want to undergo a complete rebuild. Michael Saenz of Sir Charles In Charge suggests a trade that would send Whiteside to the Portland Trail Blazers – his second option in the recent free agency.

“Call me crazy, but this is a trade that could help both teams. Centered around the pieces of C.J. McCollum and Hassan Whiteside, the Heat and Blazers would swap key pieces. In this scenario, the Blazers would get a proper big man to stick next to Damian Lillard and the Heat would get a new backcourt mate for Goran Dragic,” Saenz wrote.

The Portland Trail Blazers have been a revelation last season. Not only they secured the fifth seed in the Western Conference but they also upset the Los Angeles Clippers in the first-round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Trail Blazers fail to replicate the same performance earlier this season as they were seen struggling in some of their games.

In their recent loss to the Golden State Warriors, Damian Lillard criticized his team’s overall performance.

“This isn’t about what the coaches are doing, this is on us. We have to take responsibility for what’s going on. This s–t is ridiculous. We’ve got the talent; we’ve just got to put it together consistently,” Lillard said.

The Trail Blazers are currently the worst defensive team in the NBA. Per Hollinger’s Stats -Defensive Efficiency, they rank 30th, allowing 110.3 points per 100 possessions. Their previous games showed their need of rim protector to boost their frontcourt.

Whiteside told Erik Gunderson of Miami Herald that Portland was his second option in the recent free agency.

“Portland was my second option,” Whiteside said. “I would have came here.”

Saenz’ suggested trade scenario is quite complicated for the Trail Blazers as it would break their incredible backcourt duo. However, acquiring Hassan Whiteside could strengthen their chance of competing for the title this season.
