Ricky Rubio to the Sacramento Kings is still a hot rumor a week before the NBA season begins. According to reports, the Kings is the franchise in hot pursuit of Rubio but the Timberwolves are not rushing any trade for the Spanish point guard until rookie Kris Dunn is “ready” to take over the starting PG spot.
This is both good news and bad news for Ricky Rubio if he wants to stay in Minnesota. He is currently the starter because he has more NBA experience that Dunn. However, the rookie is projected to become an NBA star and the Timberwolves will likely explore trades of Rubio because they share the same point guard position.
Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Kings are “determined” to land Rubio. At the PG spot, he’s expected to run the team well and team up effectively with star big man DeMarcus Cousins.
However, the report claims that new coach and president Tom Thibodeau does not like to deal Rubio this early. The belief is that Dunn is not yet ready to start in his rookie year and will give him time to adjust in the pro game.
This also means that Rubio is not part of the long-term plan in Minnesota, with young guys like Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine as the other core players for the franchise.
Rubio has been mentioned in trade rumors earlier in the 2016 offseason. A Rubio to Philadelphia 76ers trade was discussed and described as the perfect deal between the two parties. The Sixers want guards for a more balanced roster and the Timberwolves could add more youth and big men in their line-up.
The Kings trade rumors for Rubio is not new since Sacramento also wants a starting point guard. However, The Kings don’t have much to offer to Minnesota. It’s not clear if a package of Rudy Gay (expiring contract) and a future first round pick will be enough to convince the Timberwolves to a trade.
