Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is desperate to add a world class striker to his team in a bid to challenge for the English Premier League (EPL) title for the upcoming season. Inter Milan forward Mario Icardi is set to sign for the Gunners if recent reports are to be believed.

“The Argentina international is set to travel to London next week to discuss joining the Gunners as they look for potential alternatives to Gonzalo Giguain should the Napoli forward join Juventus.” Tom Matson of Goal.com has reported via Sky Sport Italia.

Icardi is valued at around $55-77 million by Inter with the Argentine having a release clause of $104 million. Wenger has reportedly shifted his focus on signing the 23-year-old after his pursuit of Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain lost steam. Higuain is more likely to join Juventus with the Bianconeri willing to cash in on the world class striker.

Icardi may not be on the same level as Higuain, but if paired with Olivier Giroud upfront, could form a dangerous partnership with the Frenchman. The man from Rosario, Argentina made 33 appearances for Inter Milan in the Serie A last season scoring 16 goals. He had a shot accuracy of 50%. Icardi created 32 chances for his team, registering four assists, according to Squawka.

However, the main question that will haunt the minds of the Arsenal supporters is whether Icardi will be the world class signing the club needs. When we compared the stats of both the players, signs are not that encouraging. Both may have scored the same number of goals last season, but Giroud seems to have a little more influence on the game.

If Wenger does sign the Inter Milan striker, he will have to pair both Giroud and Icardi upfront in order to extract the maximum from them. Otherwise, it may again be another year that the Emirates suffer without the much coveted Premier League title.
