Atletico Madrid surprised FC Barcelona with 2-0 to eliminate the 2015 title holder in the 2016 Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday.
FC Barcelona stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar failed to score as they were toughly defended throughout the game.
Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann led the team by scoring two goals resulting in a 3-2 come-from-behind the victory after their loss by 2-1 in the first leg at Camp Nou.
Antoine Griezmann’s first goal was a header while his second was a breathtaking penalty kick after Andres Iniesta received a yellow card by accidentally touching the ball with his hands. The crowd rejoiced witnessing the Atletico Madrid wins over their Spanish rival.
”We’ve worked really hard defensively. We deserve it,” Griezmann said via Yahoo Sports. ”The team has made a great effort to be among the best four teams in Europe.”
Though FC Barcelona had many chances taking the ball, they were unable to convert it into goals. Luis Suarez had many chances but failed to establish. A free kick was also given to Lionel Messi but unluckily was sent over the goal.
Lionel Messi was having a hard time getting back his rhythm where he had been scoreless in his last five games. If that free kick assigned to him was a success, the match would have been different.
”It wasn’t our best day,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said via Yahoo Sports. ”We weren’t lucid and we struggled to create chances. After they scored, they did what they do best – which is defend. They did that very well and delivered a complete performance.”
With their victory against FC Barcelona, Atletico joins Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City in the 2016 Champions League semifinals.
