Atletico Madrid will need to dig goals from anywhere if they want to see themselves progressing against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last 16 tie.
Atletico Madrid is finding goals hard to come by recently. The only reason the club from Madrid are not vying for the La Liga title alongside Barcelona is because of their poor goal scorers. Atleti played a boring 0-0 draw recently at home against Villareal.
Although PSV Eindhoven offer a weaker opposition, but Atletico Madrid still need to make it count in front of goal in order to progress from the round. The match will be even more important since they face traditional rivals Real Madrid in less than three days’ time.
Antoinne Griezmann remains the only goal scoring threat for the Los Colchoneros as Jackson Martinez was recently sold to China for $45 million. It has to be noted that Martinez was not enjoying his time in Spain, but was still an additional option for Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone.
Other than Griezmann, Atletico Madrid has Fernando Torres and Luciano Vietto whom they could turn to for goals. However, El Nino Torres spent around six month without scoring before netting in two in his last three appearances.
Vietto on the other hand has looked a meager shadow of the player he was last season for Villareal. The Argentine terrorized defenses last season in the La Liga but has faded away since making a $22 million move to Madrid.
Atletico Madrid has scored just 35 goals in the La Liga this season as compared to league leaders Barcelona’s 67 and third placed Real Madrid’s 71. Their defense has been solid however with only 11 goals conceded, as reported by Squawka.com.
Hence, the problem for the Madrid team is purely their goal scoring. If they manage to create an antidote for their illness, they have a chance to progress far in the competition.
