Opinions are divided amongst the experts as well as the fans whether Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney should make the England squad ahead of the European Championships. Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi however is very clear on his opinion of England’s highest international goalscorer.

“There has always been a great deal of respect between myself and Wayne Rooney. For me he is the greatest English player of the generation.” Messi said to ShortList.

The Barcelona No. 10 also said that Rooney is a very “special” player and is capable of improving any squad in Europe. Rooney has been under constant criticism from journalists and well as fans alike who believes that the English striker has nothing more to offer and should make way for new talents like Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.

Rooney however believes that he has got what is needed to play at the top level “for a few more years”, according to express.co.uk.

“I feel I’m a lot more patient now in my play. When I was younger I could be impatient and I’d end up in positions I didn’t really need to be in” The 30-year-old said.

Lionel Messi also said that he expects the team to take one game at a time at this stage of the season. However, the man from Rosario, Argentina mentioned that his team has the “belief” to repeat the treble once again this season.

The four-time FIFA Ballon d’Or winner also mentioned that he doesn’t compete with Cristiano Ronaldo and also believes that Ronaldo doesn’t compete with him. The entire Messi vs. Ronaldo saga is created by the media.
