Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has blasted the media for the recent controversy surrounding him. The England international became United’s all-time leading European goalscorer after scoring the opening goal against Feyenoord in the Europa League.

Recently, pictures of a drunken Rooney at a wedding party emerged in the media. The 31-year-old was on England duty when the incident happened. The former Everton striker was made to apologize for his behavior, as reported by The Sun.

After the Europa League victory on Thursday night, Rooney was asked if the recent troubles made the goal more special. The man from Croxteth, Liverpool took the opportunity to take a swipe at the media.

“All that’s created by people like yourself [journalists] asking questions, making a big deal out of nothing. I didn’t set foot in the wedding and it’s a shame to have to speak about it on nights like this.” Rooney said to BT Sport 2, according to The Telegraph.

Manchester United currently lie second in Group A with 9 points from 5 games. Fenerbahce currently leads the standings with 10 points and Feyenoord are in third with 7.

The Red Devils require one more point from their final game against FC Zorya Luhansk to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

Rooney reached 248 goals for Manchester United on Thursday, only one short of matching Sir Bobby Charlton’s record goals for the club. The England international captain said that there is “plenty more to come.”
