Mauricio Pochettino was Manchester United’s first choice to replace Louis Van Gaal and not Jose Mourinho. Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Jermaine Jenas has come forward with such an interesting statement.

“If Pochettino would’ve been available he was Man United’s first choice, 100 per cent. I think they would’ve taken him over Mourinho all day long.” Jenas said to BBC.

Pochettino was the mastermind behind Tottenham’s unlikely challenge towards the Premier League title last season. The Argentine built his side around a bunch of young English talents, which impressed the United hierarchy.

However, United’s hope of hiring Pochettino took a blow when the Argentine signed a long-term contract to stay at White Hart Lane. The Red Devils then went on to hire Joe Mourinho as their new manager, sacking Van Gaal.

Jenas also claimed that Tottenham will once again be strong contenders for the Premier League title this season. He stressed on the fact that the team is up to speed already because of a wonderful pre-season. Almost all of Spurs’ key players were available from the first-day of training and they know exactly how to operate under Pochettino.

The north London club has had a mixed start to the 2016/17 campaign, garnering 1 win out of three matches. They first drew with Everton away from home, and then went on to defeat Crystal Palace at home. In their third match, Tottenham drew with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and currently occupy fifth place in the Premier League table.
