Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet in the January transfer window. The Old Trafford boss has made a wide player his priority in the winter in a bid to turn United into Premier League contenders again.
Mourinho is reportedly a big fan of Payet. The 29-year-old ticks all the boxes of what the Portuguese manager requires in his squad at Old Trafford, according to Mirror.
Payet recently signed a five-year contract extension with The Hammers and currently earns $156,000-a-week. West Ham will want a transfer fee of minimum $44 million to part with the France international.
Manchester United will approach West Ham for Payet in January. However, The Irons are likely to resist any bid for the player in the winter transfer window. But, it will be tough for the club from London to resist bids in the upcoming summer.
Mourinho wants to add pace to his Manchester United attacking lineup. He has asked his scouts to find potential candidates to fill the role. Atletico Madrid’s Belgium winger Yannick Carrasco is one of the players under his radar.
Payet has been one of the standout performers for West Ham United last season. The Frenchman won his club’s player of the season award. He was also phenomenal for France in their European Championship journey to the finals, according to ESPN.
Despite signing a contract extension at West Ham, Payet is reportedly considering a move away from the club. The Hammers start to the new season has been poor and the team currently languishes towards the bottom of the Premier League table.
Slaven Bilic’s side has garnered just 11 points from 12 games as they face Manchester United in the league on November 27, 2016. Only goal different has kept West Ham out of the bottom three in the league table, as reported by The Sun.

Manchester United manager Mourinho has lamented the absence of speed and creativity in his team’s attacks. Payet would definitely help the former Real Madrid manager achieve that if he signs for United.
The player is also deadly in free-kicks and would add a variety in United’s set plays.
