When Jose Mourinho became the Manchester United manager, people expected changes to follow. However, none expected the changes to involve Juan Mata and Daley Blind, two of the high-profile names at Old Trafford. Mourinho is looking to approve the sale of these two players should an acceptable bid come in for them.
Jose Mourinho visited United’s Carrington training facility with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Sir Bobby Charlton on Monday. Neither Blind nor Mata are expected to feature in Mourinho’s plans next season who is tasked with building a team capable of winning the Premier League, as reported by Sky Sports.
It has to be noted that Juan Mata was sold from Chelsea to United under Mourinho’s reigns in January 2014 for $49 million. Mata was declared Chelsea’s Player Of The Season just six months before. Since Mourinho’s appointment as the Old Trafford boss, Mata’s departure was likely, but very few expected the versatile Daley Blind to leave the club.
The Portuguese coach has a history of signing tall, fast and strong central defenders like Rafael Varane at Real Madrid and Kurt Zouma at Chelsea. The physical attributes of the players was key to their recruitment and Blind doesn’t reflect the physical strength required to be a central defender in a Mourinho team.
Rumors are suggesting that there could be another reason for Blind departing Old Trafford this summer. The 26-year-old criticized the way Louis Van Gaal was sacked by the United board. He stressed that the Dutchman should have been given more time with the job and this clearly highlights his feelings towards Jose Mourinho’s appointment at the club.
Although Mata and Blind are expected to leave Manchester United soon, the news has not been confirmed officially by the club yet.
