Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to add a defender in the January transfer window. Southampton center-back Virgil van Dijk is one of the two defenders the Portuguese has reportedly targeted.
Southampton values van Dijk at $37 million and above. Should the Dutchman become too expensive to pursue, Mourinho will turn his attention to Bayer Leverkusen defender Aleksandar Dragovic. Dragovic will command a transfer fee of around $25 million, according to David McDonnell of Daily Mirror.
Mourinho reportedly wants heavy financial backing from the Manchester United board in the winter transfer window. This is despite the fact that a fortune was spent in the summer to strengthen the Red Devils since the former Real Madrid manager took over.
United signed center-back Eric Bailly for $37 million from Villareal in the summer transfer window. However, Mourinho wants a couple of more defensive signings at Old Trafford. This is also motivated by the fact that Bailly will miss most of January and early February, next year.
Bailly will feature for Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations. Hence, the 53-year-old believes that bringing in new defenders at the club is vital.
Mourinho also has concerns over the existing defensive options at Manchester United. The former Chelsea manager has questioned the mental toughness of Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw. The future of Matteo Darmian and Macos Rojo also looks uncertain.
The 25-year-old Van Dijk has become one of the most accomplished central defenders in the Premier League. The player is known for his raw power, pace and flawless tacking. He is also a dominating force in the air and has good technique with the ball.
“There is not much more to add to the usual praise for the Dutchman, the best defender in the Premier League.” Alex Crook of ESPN stated on Van Dijk, after the Saints drew 0-0 against Liverpool.

Aleksandar Dragovic will be a good Van Dijk alternative?
Should Virgil van Dijk’s transfer fee of $37 million becomes too much for Jose Mourinho, he will change his focus to Aleksandar Dragovic. The 25-year-old Austrian center-back has the ultra-aggressive and uncompromising nature which Mourinho loves in his defenders.
Dragovic is a good player, physically and technically. He will feature well alongside Bailly in defense and will form a formidable partnership with the Ivory Coast international.
However, the player has a disciplinary history. The man from Vienna has picked up four red cards and numerous yellow cards in his career so far, as reported by Transfermarkt.co.uk.
