Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal with Real Madrid over center-back Raphael Varane. The Premier League giants have already concluded negotiations with the Los Blancos over the defender and are presently in talks with the player over a summer transfer.
United will reportedly pay Real a transfer fee of €60 million ($65m) for Varane. If the reports are true, then this will be a world record fee for a defender, according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon.
Jose Mourinho, United manager has been in constant talks with Varane in an attempt to lure him to Old Trafford. The Special One is in contact with the France international regarding a summer switch to Manchester.
However, any deal for Varane would likely involve Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea switching his alliance to Real Madrid. The Los Blancos have been interested in the Spanish international keeper for a long time.
Varane, De Gea switch possible
Real are willing to splash £60 million ($77m) on the Spain star as they look to make amends for their disastrous attempt two years ago. A last-minute issue with paperwork between both clubs scuppered a move for De Gea in September 2015.
Real Madrid consider Varane as an indispensable part of their future. With defenders like Pepe nearing the end of his prime years, the Frenchman, at the age of 24 will provide a defensive stability at the Santiago Bernabeu for years to come. However, with the transfer fee involved, it could be too tempting for Real to sell the defender.
Mourinho has struggled to cement a defensive partnership in his debut United season. Eric Bailly, a £30m ($39m) summer signing from Villarreal, is a regular for the Red Devils, but question marks remain over the remaining position.
Marcos Rojo has filled in well this season but Mourinho prefers to play him at left-back when possible. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have both missed too many games through injury, while Daley Blind, who Louis van Gaal often used at centre-back has fallen down the pecking order.
United interested in Morata
Meanwhile, Alvaro Morata is another Real Madrid star Jose Mourinho is interested in buying. The Real Madrid hierarchy are more lenient on letting the striker leave. However, they value the player at over £50m ($64.5m).
United are also reportedly interested in Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The Red Devils have started to prepare for life without David De Gea. Hence, they are seeing the Slovenian as a perfect replacement for the departing Spaniard, according to The Sun.
The 24-year-old has a £77.5m ($100m) release clause on his contract. He is contracted to Atletico until 2021.
