Manchester United transfer news suggests that United and England captain Wayne Rooney is considering a move away from Old Trafford after the end of the current season. The 31-year-old is considering a romantic return to his boyhood club Everton.
Everton is presently leading the race in the pursuit of Rooney. The Toffees believe that a deal for the Englishman is likely to happen with United also interested. Sources close to both clubs have given positive signals regarding the Wazza transfer. They have also claimed that The Red Devils will consider waving the player’s transfer fee to make the deal happen, according to The Independent.
According to reports, Everton will offer a salary in the region of £150,000-a-week ($189,101) to the striker. This will be much less than what he is earning at United presently. But, Rooney feels that the pull of his former club is strong enough for him to make a switch, as reported by MIRROR.CO.UK.
West Ham United shows interest in Rooney
On Tuesday, speculations that Premier League club West Ham United is also interested in the signature of United’s all-time leading goalscorer arose. David Sullivan, co-owner of the club, is considering a transfer bid for the Englishman in the summer.
However, Rooney prefers a return to Goodison Park and will choose his boyhood club over the Londoners. The man from Croxteth, Liverpool has Everton as his first choice should he leave United. It has to be noted that England’s all-time top scorer left The Toffees for The Red Devils in 2004 as an 18-year-old.
The last few months have been tough for Rooney, both for United and for the England national team. The arrival of new manager Jose Mourinho has seen the player fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford. It has come to a point that England manager Gareth Southgate has also excluded the player’s name from his England squad set for Wednesday’s friendly away to Germany and Sunday’s home qualifier against Lithuania.
China still an option for Rooney
Manchester United was previously willing to let Rooney leave for the Chinese Super League at the end of February. However, the 31-year-old realized that he has more to offer at the Premier League level. Hence, he chose to skip China. It is also believed that Rooney’s representatives were put off by the level of football in Asia.
Rooney is also willing to fight for a place in the England team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Hence, the Englishman will try to prove his worth in England among the world’s best players.
However, China could still be an option in the future for Rooney, but it will depend on how his England future shapes up in the summer.
