Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has fears that midfielder Paul Pogba will miss the Manchester Derby on Thursday. The world’s most-expensive footballer limped off in United’s 2-0 win against Burnley on Sunday.
Manchester United’s £89million midfielder pulled up in the closing minutes at Turf Moor and was substituted in stoppage time. Mourinho already has huge injury troubles with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo, Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all long-term absentees. Now, Pogba is a huge doubt for Thursday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester City.
“I don’t know. Dead he is for sure. If he’s injured or if it’s just the super accumulation of fatigue in the muscles, I don’t know,” Mourinho said after the Burnley game, as reported by Mirror.
“But as I was saying, if he cannot play Thursday he cannot play Thursday. We play another one and we don’t cry, like we didn’t today.”
Pogba rivaled Martial as the key player against Burnley
The 24-year-old was seen clutching his leg before being replaced by Michael Carrick. The £89million man had a fine game at Turf Moor, rivaling goal scorer Anthony Martial as the stand-out player.
Meanwhile, The Reds secured an impressive 2-0 win away at Burnley with goals from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney. Both the players were handed rare starts in the Premier League. United and their fans will be sweating on the fitness of their French maestro as the end of the season closes in.
Mourinho more concerned with Rojo and Ibrahimovic injury
United lost Ibrahimovic and Rojo to knee injuries for the rest of the season in Thursday’s extra-time Europa League victory over Anderlecht at Old Trafford. However, Mourinho refused to be drawn on the extent of any injury suffered by Pogba. But, he did speak about the injuries to Ibrahimovic and Rojo.
“We wanted Anthony Martial to get behind as he’s faster, and he did well. But I can’t choose an individual performance as they all did well. Paul Pogba and Eric Bailley get a mention after two hours of football at against Anderlecht,” Mourinho added, as reported by The Sun.
“Everyone is very sad [about Ibrahimovic and Rojo injuries]. We were thinking about them. They have to be strong. Unfortunately they wont be the first or last players to get an important injury.”
United wore training tops with the duo’s names printed on the back at Burnley. Mourinho described Rojo and Ibrahimovic as amazing players.
Meanwhile, Manchester United next travel to the Etihad Stadium to face city rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on Thursday.
