Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel is content with new manager Jose Mourinho’s influence at the club. The Great Dane feels “optimistic” about The Red Devils’ future after seeing them improve under Mourinho.

“I think it’s been fantastic, I expected it to be another bumpy year. Jose has inherited a squad of players and he will have had to assess every one of them,” Schmeicher said to Sky Sports.

“He is doing that quicker than I thought he would have done. Plus, the four additions in the summer [Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba], they have all been really good.”

The 53-year-old believes that Manchester United are slowly getting back to the attacking brand of football associated with the club. According to him, always looking to score a goal is in the club’s DNA. Mourinho has done well to imbibe that in the new set of players.

“I think Jose has always tried to protect the lead but it is not in our DNA to [do so], it’s to get number two, number three and number four. [But] he has sent the players out to get two, three and four. It’s great to watch and hopefully it’s going to be evolved and developed,” Schmeichel stated.

Schmeichel feels that Manchester United are good enough to challenge for a top four position in the Premier League this season. The man from Gladsaxe Municipality, Denmark has revealed that he will be disappointed should The Red Devils fail to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Manchester United are currently unbeaten in the Premier League since October, last year. The Red Devils suffered their last defeat against league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The great run of form has catapulted United into the top four picture. Mourinho’s men are also fighting for honors in four competitions – Premier League, EFL Cup, FA Cup and the Europa League, according to Eurosport.

“I would be very disappointed if we are not top four. There is a lot of progress, the team is shaping up and the club is getting back into its own rhythm, its own groove.” Schmeichel added.

Schmeichel played 402 times for United since joining the club from Brondby in 1991. He has since gone on to win 10 major trophies at Old Trafford. He was also involved in the famous 1999 treble winning team.
