Joan Gaspart, the former president of Barcelona, said Real Madrid is “detrimental” to football. Gaspart responded to a claim from the Real Madrid camp that Barcelona have tried to bribe Granada players and officials.
“The only thing Real Madrid do is harm football,” the 71-year-old Gaspart said in a Spanish newspaper.
“If I was a Granada player I’d be offended, because it insinuates that I could be bought, it’s an indecent campaign. I believe in football and its honesty. If such things are discovered, though – through secure investigations – then the clubs involved will have to be punished.”
Granada and Barcelona will meet on Saturday in their final La Liga match-up that is crucial for Barcelona, which are currently atop the Spanish Primera table with 28 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses or 88 points. Real Madrid is in second place with 87 points (27 wins, 6 draws and 4 losses).
Barcelona has won four of their last six matches while Real Madrid has won their last nine matches to gain ground on their heated rivals. A win for Barcelona over Granada this Saturday will clinch the back-to-back titles for the club.
Gaspart was the president of FC Barcelona from July 23, 2000 to February 12, 2003.
