Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez is being linked with a summer transfer move to Arsenal. However, his agent has recently denied any speculations linking his client to the Emirates Stadium, thus pouring cold water over what could have been a spicy transfer.
“Riyad Mahrez’s agent has denied that there is any interest from Arsenal in the player despite reports in France today.” Ed Aarons of the Guardian tweeted.
A recent report suggested that Mahrez was on his way to join Arsenal for a $54.9 million fee. However, after the declaration from his agent, the deal loses some steam, at least for the moment.
The Algerian international though, have previously expressed his desire of leaving the English Premier League (EPL) champions this summer. Mahrez was sensational for the Foxes last season and was an important part in helping his team win the Premier League.
Leicester City captain, Wes Morgan has urged the player to stay back with the club this season. His club manager, Claudio Ranieri has also expressed his confidence of retaining the player for another year, as reported by Ben Fisher of the Guardian.
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has been chasing a world class striker this summer to increase his team’s chances for converting more goals. The Gunners were one of the main challengers for the Premier League title last season along with Leicester, but faltered because of their lack of goals upfront.
Signing Mahrez could be ideal for Arsenal, if they fail to sign their desired summer target of a striker. A goalscoring winger on the right hand side in the similar mold to that of Alexis Sanchez on the left could also help the Gunners solve their goalscoring problems.
Despite receiving an early blow while chasing the player, Arsenal could still push for the transfer as this is a deal Wenger wouldn’t like to miss.
