Two red-cards reduced the game to ten against ten at MetLife stadium, New Jersey. Lionel Messi was also booked for an adventurous play acting inside the box. Chilean midfielder Marcelo Diaz received marching orders after double-booking, the second one for body checking Lionel Messi.

Argentina came closest to drawing blood in the 24th minute when Gonzalo Higuain pounced on a defensive lapse but placed marginally wider off target. Messi displayed some of his quixotic touch and Tata Martino’s team gained control in the midfield. But a lot remained at stake at the end of the first session for the packed crowd at MetLife to return “messi-merized”.

But the 15-time Copa America winners were denied the one man advantage when Marco Rojo’s harsh tackle from behind fetched the left-back a direct read. The tackle was quite harsh, and the decision looked even more harsher.

The game was scoreless at full-time which took the match to extra-time. However, despite having some close scares, neither of the teams made any particular effort to end the match before the dreaded penalty shootouts.

After a scoreless extra-time, it was penalties all over again for the second-year running between the same teams. Messi and Biglia missed for Argentina while Vidal missed for Chile. Thus, Chile surpassed Messi’s Argentina again to win the Copa America, second-year in a row.

This is the third time in three years that Argentina have lost out in the finals of a major competition. First it was Germany in the World Cup in 2014. Next it was Chile in the Copa America in 2015 and now in 2016.

One must wonder, when will the great Lionel Messi win a major tournament for his national team?
