English Premier League (EPL) club Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger is on the verge of signing Lars Bender of Bayer Leverkusen. Bender has been a long-time target of Wenger and Leverkusen’s chairman has given the green light for the transfer to materialize.
Arsenal is going through an injury crisis at the moment. First team midfielders Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky have been sidelined for months and no possible date of return is known for the trio.
The 26-year-old Bender could make his move in January and fill up the midfield void at the Emirates stadium.
Leverkusen had previously denied any transfer speculations linking Bender to Arsenal. However, their stance of selling the player to the Gunners has softened recently.
“Bayer Leverkusen can’t be as arrogant to say that we are creating world stars and they will retire here. If we are able to create a world star or top player, then one day this player wants to play for one of the top [clubs in the world], of course.” Michael Schade, chairman of Leverkusen said, as reported by The Telegraph.
Granit Xhaka, another Bundesliga midfielder has been linked with a move to the Emirates stadium. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder is a favorite of Wenger and can soon be seen scorching the pitch under the Frenchman.
Monchengladbach has been trying desperately to keep hold of their star midfielder but has now seemed to lose the battle and is preparing to live life without Xhaka.
“I don’t know what will happen in the summer. There are always situations a club has to give consideration to. It depends on our sporting success.” Max Eberl, Monchengladbach director said.
Xhaka has recently dropped a huge hint regarding his departure to Arsenal.
The 23-year-old who wears the No. 34 shirt has his sights on Francis Coquelin’s jersey.
“That was my first professional number at Basel. And at Arsenal Coquelin has it. I’ve spoken with him; he would like to take another number.” Xhaka said to Tor Fabrik.
