The National Basketball Association reportedly will look into the altercation involving New York Knicks head coach Derek Fisher and his former teammate and Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes that happened in California over the weekend.
The scuffle, which happened Saturday night, happened after Barnes found Fisher with his estranged wife, Gloria Govan, and her family members at the backyard of her Los Angeles home. The fight then escalated from there, into the kitchen, and the spilled over to the home’s front room, according to one witness.
Fisher was in California to visit his children and then visited the house that Barnes shared with Govan, a former star of the reality show “Basketball Wives LA”, sources revealed.
Barnes had just wrapped up training camp with the Grizzlies in Santa Barbara and arrived at the house to find his estranged wife with Fisher. Barnes allegedly had known for quite some time now about Fisher and Govan’s alleged relationship.
The New York Post, citing anonymous sources, was the first to report about the said altercation.
Fisher was not at the Knicks’ practice last team – citing personal reasons, but was present when the team opened their preseason scrimmage Wednesday night versus a Brazilian club team.
It can be recalled that Fisher and Barnes were teammates with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2010-12. The Grizzlies just finished with training camp last week in Santa Barbara, California, and the Post reported that Barnes drove to Govan’s home when he learned that Fisher was there.
Fisher, 41, is in his second year as head tactician for the Knicks. He spent most of his playing career in LA where his children still reside.
Fisher filed for divorce from his wife, Candace, in March, while Barnes, 35, and Govan are currently undergoing divorce proceedings.
Sources said that Fisher is considering taking legal action against Barnes for the incident. Charges have not been filed so far.
The NBA security, Knicks, and Grizzlies have been made aware of the incident and are expected to soon work together to look into the events that transpired Saturday night.
The Grizzlies and Knicks are scheduled to battle each other on January 16 in New York.
