Benson Henderson just created a big stir in the MMA world with one single move.
The former UFC lightweight champion announced via his website on Monday morning that he is leaving UFC. Henderson has signed a new deal with Bellator.
Calling it a big move, Henderson said that he is quite excited for the “next phase of his career”.
“It’s a big move, like any move when switching employers or jobs after having worked somewhere for such a long time,” Henderson wrote.
Benson Henderson is the most high profile fighter to leave UFC for Bellator till now. Popularly known as ‘Smooth’, Benson has won two fights in a row and four of six overall.
“I’d be remiss to not thank Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta for the opportunities they presented me, you guys have helped me change my life for the better and to be able to provide my family with the things I didn’t have while growing up. For that I’ll always have the utmost appreciation. Thanks for all the advise you guys gave too, both business wise and personal,” Henderson wrote.
Henderson won the UFC lightweight title from Frankie Edgar in February 2012. However, he lost the belt to Anthony Pettis in August 2013. Benson still remains one of the best fighters in the world at both lightweight and welterweight.
Henderson also thanked his wife and family for their support in his decision. Not one to forget his fans, Benson thanked all his fans for their love and support.
“To my fans, thanks for all the love and support, I’ll keep giving you my all, opening up my heart and soul inside that cage. I’m excited for this next chapter and building new relationships with guys I’ve heard nothing but great things about like Scott Coker, Rich Chou and Mike Kogan,” Benson wrote.
