Canelo set to face biggest upset of the year, according to Khan

Since the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan middleweight title fight was announced, fans have readily jumped on the bandwagon to criticize the bout. Khan has been very vocal about his faceoff with the Mexican and has openly vowed to deliver an upset of the year.

The fight will take place on May 7, 2016 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout will be at a catchweight of 155-pounds which is five pounds under the regular 160-pound limit.

Canelo is the more decorated fighter between the two and is easily touted as the favorite to win against Khan. However, the man from Greater Manchester does not feel he is the underdog. According to Khan, history will be made when he defeats the Mexican boxing icon.

“My fight with Canelo Alvarez will be the biggest fight of the year, including the biggest upset of the year.” Khan said, as reported by Boxingscene.

Five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather doesn’t think that it’s a good idea for Khan to make the jump in weight. While having a tour of the United Kingdom, Mayweather had his say on the showdown.

“I think that Amir Khan should have fought Kell Brook.” Mayweather said.

Mayweather feels that the size difference would prove a hindrance for Khan and that facing Brook for the IBF welterweight title would have been a smarter option.

Khan however has suggested that he was looking for a bigger challenge in Canello despite the fact that a face off with Brook would have garnered more money.

Khan wants to see himself as the biggest name in boxing with Mayweather retired and Pacquiao soon to follow. The win over Canelo will give him that recognition.

“Someone has to take that spot and once I beat Canelo Alvarez I will be the top guy in the world of boxing.” Khan stated.
