The Los Angeles Lakers have been given permission to interview assistant coach Ettore Messina, who is being targeted to be L.A.’s head coach to add to the Lakers rumors of their coaching targets for next season that includes the likes of Derek Fisher, Phil Jackson and other coaching prospects.
It is unknown when the Los Angeles Lakers will interview the veteran mentor, according to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports but the Spurs have a break before their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Game 1 is set this Saturday.
Messina joined the Spurs’ coaching staff in 2014 after previously coaching CSKA Moscow (2005 to 2009), Real Madrid (2009 to 2011), Benetton Treviso (2002 to 2005) and Virtus Bologna (1997 to 2002).
Lakers rumors has it that Messina is a prime target for the Lakers squad which saw their worst performance in franchise history.
Messina was previously a consultant for the Lakers when they had head coach Mike Brown and also the head coach of the Italian basketball national team since 2015.
The 56 year old mentor is a four-time Euroleague champion winning the championship in Europe in 1998, 2001, 2006 and 2008 and a two-time Euroleague Coach of the Year, in 2006 and 2008.
Other Lakers rumors have linked the Lakers head coaching job to John Calipari, Kevin Ollie, Jeff Van Gundy, Fisher, Jackson and Luke Walton, among others.
