Already assured of missing the 2016 NBA Playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers are looking to speed up their return to the glory days by acquiring stars, either this season via trade or in free agency after the season, to complement their young core.
One target for the Lakers is Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat. The young center has played his way to a big contract the past two seasons and will become a free agent after the 2015-2016 season.
Whiteside will be an unrestricted free agent in the 2016 offseason so the Heat will have to offer a lucrative contract to convince him to stay in Miami. With the winning tradition and history of the Lakers and the lure of Hollywood, the Los Angeles squad will most likely indulge the Heat in a bidding war during the summer.
An ESPN Insider report also stated that the Lakers are not waiting for the offseason to try to acquire Whiteside but are already exploring for trades with the Heat, if the latter is willing to let them go.
With Miami in contention for the playoffs this season, it’s highly unlikely that they trade the young center, who is known for his defensive skills and shot blocking. Whiteside leads the league in blocked shots with nearly four blocked shots per game.
But losing Whiteside in free agency for nothing is a possibility for the Heat so Whiteside to Lakers trade is something they have to at least to consider especially if they can get back one of the Lakers’ young guys like Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle and DeAngelo Russell.
The Lakers have 9 wins against 38 losses in the current season and have the second-worst record in the league, just better than the Philadelphia 76ers, who are also on their way to the draft lottery.
