Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula One (F1) World Champion Michael Schumacher, has secured second place in the season finale race of the MRF Challenge event held in Chennai from Jan. 29 to Jan. 31, 2016.
Belgian Alessio Picariello claimed the top spot while Colombian Tatiana Calderon clinched the third place in the podium.
Schumacher Jr. said he was happy to have been able to race alongside some of the good drivers in the sport. The 16-year-old was also claim second podium in the quadruple-header event held at the Madras motor racing track in Chennai.
“For sure, I am pleased and really happy to be in this environment, to drive against some good drivers who have a lot of International experience, so I am really happy to be second,” Schumacher Jr. said in an interview as quoted by Motorsport.com. “It feels great to drive with the people who have experience, and to see I can compete with them is good.”
This year is the fourth installment of the MRF Challenge, an India-based single-seaters championship event. It kicked off at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 31, 2015 and held its fourth and final race in India on Jan. 31, 2016. Schumacher Jr. only competed in the final race in India over the weekend.
Brazilian driver Pietro Fittipaldi is currently the leader in the Drivers’ Standings with 244 points after rounds in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Dubai, and India followed by Calderon with 199 points. Russian Nikita Troitsky has 191 points while Picariello has 181 points.
Schumacher Jr. is 10th with 51 points. The 2015-2016 MRF Challenge also featured Harrison Newey, son of Red Bull technical wizard Adrian, and Guiliano Alesi, son of former Ferrari F1 star Jean.
Schumacher Jr. is expected to continue his run in German Formula 4 (F4) this season in 2016. He finished 10th in last season’s German F4 Championship.
