Beleaguered quarterback Johnny Manziel reportedly into more trouble with the Cleveland Browns following the end of his second pro season.
Johnny Manziel is sinking deep in legal troubles off the field, and now his team – the Cleveland Browns – have further implied that the former Heisman trophy winner has worn out his welcome.
Manziel, the controversial Browns quarterback – which, in recent months, has jeopardized his marketing deal with LeBron James’ LRMR agency and his shoe contract with Nike due to his off the field issues – added another stain alleged assault issues with his ex-girlfriend this weekend.
Police in Forth Worth, Texas filed a report on receiving a call from a woman – who identified herself to officers as an ex-girlfriend of Johnny Manziel – about a disturbance caused by Manziel himself.
In response, the Cleveland Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown released a statement, saying Manziel’s recent actions “undermines the hard work of his teammates.”
“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization,” said Brown in a report by USA Today.
“His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.”
The Cleveland Browns, which hold the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft this April, can choose to release or trade Manziel on March 9 – the start of the new year for the NFL – and draft their third quarterback in the last five years.
Prior to drafting Johnny Manziel in 2014, Brandon Weeden served as the last first round QB selection in 2012.
“Johnny Football” had a rough stretch in the last year, spending ten weeks in rehabilitation for an undisclosed reason. Despite improved play on the field, his off-field issues failed to subside. Manziel and his girlfriend were questioned by highway police on the same day they both admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol, though they were both eventually let go.
By the end of the 2015 NFL season, Manziel lost his starting QB position after he was caught partying in mid-season during bye week. On the same weekend of his mandated post-concussion checkup and the Browns’ final regular season game, Manziel was said to be spotted partying in Las Vegas.
