PBA 2016: Denzel Bowles, James Yap tows Star Hotshots to first win over Blackwater

James Yap, in his first start of the tournament, brings the Star Hotshots to its first win of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

CUBAO, PHILIPPINES – The Star Hotshots finally got into the win column at the expense of Blackwater Elite, 122-103, in the continuation of the 2016 OPPO PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

James Yap, named as a starter for the first time this conference, scored 13 of his 15 points in the first quarter alone to start the pullaway.

Returning import Denzel Bowles provided the consistent scoring punch, putting up 28 points with eight rebounds and five assists. Allein Maliksi pulled through from the bench, contributing 23 points to aid the Hotshots in their first win after four outings.

MJ Rhett continued his impressive ways with 30 points and 21 rebounds, while Carlo Lastimosa added 20 points for the Elite. Blackwater slid down to 2-2 (won-lost).

“Everything was clicking today,” said Star Hotshots coach Jason Webb. “Local support and Denzel [Bowles] delivered [tonight].”
