Vela, Dos Santos brothers out of Mexico’s Copa America squad

The Mexico squad for Copa America has been revealed, and it has come as a shocker as star players Carlos Vela and Jonathan and Giovani dos Santos are not on the list.

Giovani dos Santos, who has played well at LA Galaxy, was expected to be on the list as Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio has already hinted that the Mexican forward will be called up for June.

However, Gio dos Santos, who said on a radio show that he is not sure about being called up, declined the offer, saying in his tweet that he is honored to be picked by the FMF, but couldn’t participate and his heart is with the team.

Speculations are spreading and the decision by Giovani is once again linked to his controversial tweet of encouragement for former Mexico coach Miguel Herrera when the coach swung at a TV reporter moments after winning the Gold Cup 2015.

On the other hand, Vela and Giovani’s brother, Jonathan dos Santos, has also made it clear that they will not be joining the squad in June, as they agreed with Mexico’s coaching staff that a summer’s rest would be great for their careers.

Jonathan has been doing good in his first 20 games with his new club, Villareal, but Vela has been facing troubles with disciplinary actions in Real Sociedad.

Osorio has, however, called up familiar names in the Mexico squad, including Malaga goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Bayer Leverkeusen striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, and PSV midfielder Andres Guardado.
