FEU cemented its place in history by winning its 20th UAAP men’s basketball title at the expense of UST, 67-62, in the do-or-die Game 3 of their titular battle Wednesday at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City.
Exactly a decade since bagging its last championship, its victory this season gives Far Eastern University the distinction of owning the most number of titles in the collegiate league’s 78 years of existence.
This was the first time the FEU Tamaraws squared off against the UST Growling Tigers for the title since 1979. In their first faceoff, FEU also got the better of UST.
Mac Belo played his final game as a Tamaraw and listed a game-best 23 points with eight rebounds. His heroics, second half cramps notwithstanding, earned for him Finals MVP honors.
He averaged 17.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 1 block per game in the nail-biting championship battle.
The Tams’ victory also erased the stigma of their heartbreaking loss to the National University Bulldogs last season. They won the first game of the best-of-three series only to yield in the next two.
