Nadal is aiming for his 15th Grand Slam title. If he wins over Federer on Sunday, he’d just be two away from the Swiss’ all-time record in total majors win in the men’s singles tennis history. Before the match, Nadal is also the slight favorite over Federer in the championship round at the 2017 Australian Open.
Federer more successful in career but Nadal ahead in rivalary
Federer has more Grand Slam titles but the one player he has failed to dominate is Nadal. The Spanish pro is ahead of their head-to-head meetings, 23-11 overall. The Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer rivalry now totals 35 matches after the Aussie Open.
The last time Nadal and Federer met on court, it was in the final of 2015 Swiss Indoors Basel. Federer won in his own backyard, 6-3, 5-7 and 6-3. The last time they met at a Grand Slam tournament, it was in the semifinals of the 2014 Australian Open. Nadal won that one in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-3 and 6-3.
Federer has won four times in Australia, in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010. Meanwhile, Nadal has won one time here in 2009.

The Spaniard knows that the Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer rivalry is something special. He said it’s great for the sport and happy that they both have reached the final in Australia.
“Well, it was amazing for me, for me and I think for tennis, too. It is the combination of two different styles that makes the matches really special,” Nadal stated via the tournament’s official website.
“Both of us, I think, having a lot of good success with these two different styles. I feel that this rivalry go not only in the tennis world. People from outside of our world talks about this, and that’s good for our sport. Is good that we are back there.”
Federer agreed that his rivalry with Nadal is special. The Swiss said that he understands how big the Nadal vs. Federer final would be on Sunday.
“I’m in the finals, I know that. I know I will have a chance to win on Sunday now. That’s a great position to be in. Regardless of who it’s going to be against, I think it’s going to be special either way. One is going to go for his first slam or it’s the epic battle with Rafa,” Federer stated before he knew which opponent he drew with after the semifinals.
“All I care about is that I can win on Sunday. Doesn’t matter who’s across the net. But I understand the magnitude of the match against Nadal, no doubt about it.”
