Tennis rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be playing together for one team in a new tournament in 2017. The Swiss and Spaniard, former world numbers ones, will be playing at the first Laver Cup tennis tournament next year.
The new tennis tourney is similar to golf’s Ryder Cup, a competition between teams from Europe pitted against a squad from the United States of America. The Laver Cup, named after tennis great Rod Laver will be a competition that will have a European team against another squad, which will consist of players from ”rest of the world.”
With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal committed to play in the inaugural Laver Cup, Team Europe are the favorite to win the competition if both can stay healthy and avoid injuries next year.
“It’s going to be absolutely unbelievable to be on the same side of the net as Rafa, finally. It’s a great feeling, rather than always facing that big forehand, now I can actually support it and say ‘hit one more’ and I’ll take a lot of joy out of it,” Federer stated in a press conference.
Federer will be missing the rest of the 2016 ATP season and will miss the 2016 US Open while Nadal will play in New York. Both has struggled with injuries at this point of their careers but both can still contend for titles like Nadal who recently won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“I always love the team spirit, and it’s going to be a very special feeling to be on the same team as Roger. We have been rivals for all our careers, so to be on the same team and even play doubles together will be very, very special,” Nadal stated.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are two of the best players in the history of the tennis. Federer has 17 grand slams while Nadal has 14, and the pair teaming up for Team Europe at the 2017 Laver Cup will be something to watch for next year.
