Serbian veteran Tennis player Novak Djokovic takes 2016 Rogers Cup title after defeating Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the 2016 Rogers Cup Finals, Sunday at Toronto,Canada.
Djokovic outlasts Nishikori in the straight set with a score of 6-3, 7-5 to grab his fourth Rogers Cup title. The world’s number one tennis had impressive performance over Asia’s top tennis player finishing him in less than 90 minutes.
Djokovic will now focus his attention preparing for the upcoming Summer Olympics this August 2016 at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
“I’m approaching the Olympic Games as any other tournament. I’m trying to respect the same kind of preparation and routine that I have with my team and that I have respected for so many years. He said.
Meanwhile, in the women’s division tournament, Romanian Simona Halep defeated American Madison Keys to claim the Rogers Cup title for the women’s division, Sunday also at Montreal, Canada.
Halep outlasts Keys in straight sets with a score of 7-6(2) 6-3 to take his fourteenth WTA title.
It was a special sweet victory for Halep, who also played last year’s Rogers Cup final in Toronto against rising Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic but had to step down in the third set due to a leg injury.
Halep upgraded her career record against Keys to 3-1, having trampled the American over three sets in their most recent encounter at Wimbledon earlier this month, and will rise to the third spot when the world rankings are issued on Monday.
Novak Djokovic already has seven titles this year and 66 overall. He has 12 Grand Slam titles to his name, winning this year in Australia and France.
After claiming the Rogers Cup title, Djokovic will now try to get the prestigious Olympic gold medal this Rio Olympics after failing last 2012 London Olympics to end in a podium finish. He won the bronze medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics.
